Medical Laboratory Technology Program & Training

The Medical Laboratory Technology program at Sanford-Brown College-Houston (SBC) is designed to prepare students to perform manual and automated tests on patients’ specimens under the supervision of physicians, lab managers or laboratory technologists, employed in hospitals, independent laboratories or doctors’ offices. Students will also be taught lab quality control, including the preventative and corrective maintenance of instrumentation and equipment. The core curriculum is structured to include a lecture component, an laboratory component, and a clinical component. The final externship portion of the curriculum consists of supervised experiences in a clinical environment, which requires competencies, logs, and evaluations completed by the student. At the conclusion of the program, graduates who have diligently attended class and their externship, studied, and practiced their skills should have the skills to seek entry-level employment as medical laboratory technicians.

Graduates of SBC’s Medical Laboratory Technology program are eligible for and encouraged to take the Medical Laboratory Technician certification exam offered by American Medical Technologists (AMT) upon graduation. This credential is a nationally recognized voluntary certification that could enhance employment opportunities. The American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) also offers a certification exam, however, graduates of SBC’s Medical Laboratory Technology program are not eligible to take this exam because only graduates of programs accredited by National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) are eligible for the exam, and SBC cannot guarantee that the program will be accredited by NACCLS or that students will be eligible to take the ASCP certification exam, at all or at any specific time.
